Flooring Calculator

Calculate how much tile, hardwood, laminate, or vinyl you need for a room, including waste percentage and cost estimate.

Room Dimensions

Room Areas

Add rectangular areas that make up your room. For L-shaped or irregular rooms, add each section separately.

L: ft × W: ft

Material Details

× in
Common sizes: 12×12, 18×18, 24×24 in
10% standard, 15% for diagonal/complex layouts

How It Works

Calculation Method

The flooring calculator estimates the amount of material needed using these steps:

  1. Room area = sum of all rectangular sections (length × width)
  2. Waste area = room area × waste percentage
  3. Total area needed = room area + waste area
  4. Pieces needed = total area ÷ area per piece (tile or plank)
  5. Boxes needed = pieces ÷ pieces per box (rounded up)
Waste Percentage Guide
  • Simple rectangular room: 5–10% waste
  • Standard layout: 10% waste (recommended default)
  • Diagonal or herringbone pattern: 15–20% waste
  • Complex room shape or many cuts: 15–20% waste
  • Large-format tiles in small rooms: 15–20% waste
Flooring Type Notes
  • Tile: Sold individually or by the box. Account for grout spacing (not included in area calculation). Larger tiles mean fewer cuts but more waste on edges.
  • Hardwood: Sold by the box or square foot. Plank widths typically range from 2.25–5 inches. Allow material to acclimate 48 hours before installation.
  • Laminate: Sold in boxes covering a specific area. Planks click together for floating installation. No glue or nails needed for most products.
  • Vinyl: Planks or tiles are waterproof and work well in kitchens and bathrooms. Sold by the box or individually.
